Most crews will dismantle beds and large wardrobes and reassemble them at the destination, billed within the hourly rate — but confirm it's included and tell them how many items need it. Flat-pack furniture is fragile when rebuilt more than once; some firms refuse liability for it. Doing your own dismantling the day before saves an hour or more of crew time.

Declutter first — volume drives price, and a skip-load of junk can be cheaper than moving it. Pack yourself, dismantle furniture in advance, book midweek and mid-month, and be fully ready when the crew arrives (hourly clocks run while you tape boxes). Moving the small stuff yourself by car and leaving only furniture to the pros also shrinks the crew hours.

Basic coverage included in most quotes is minimal (often a small amount per item or per kilo/pound). Ask about full-value protection or goods-in-transit insurance, what it costs, and what's excluded — owner-packed boxes are usually not covered for breakage. Photograph valuable items before the move and note any damage on the delivery sheet before the crew leaves.

Book 2-4 weeks ahead for a standard local move, and 6-8 weeks for peak periods — summer, the start and end of each month, and weekends, which sell out first. Last-minute slots exist midweek and mid-month, and some companies discount them.

Midweek (Tuesday-Thursday) and mid-month dates are consistently cheapest, since leases and completions cluster at month-end and weekends sell out. Off-season months also quote lower. If your dates are flexible, ask each Springs company which of your candidate dates is cheapest — some openly discount slow days.

A local 1-bedroom move typically runs R2,000-R6,000, a 3-bedroom house R6,000-R16,000. Intercity moves (e.g. Joburg-Cape Town) are quoted per load: a shared part-load for a small flat can be R5,000-R12,000 while a dedicated truck for a full house runs R15,000-R35,000+.

On long-distance routes, movers combine several customers' goods in one truck and charge you only for your share of the space — often 30-50% cheaper than a dedicated vehicle. The trade-off is a delivery window of several days rather than a fixed date. It's the standard budget option for intercity moves in South Africa.
