Refrigerant does not get used up — if the level is low, there is a leak. A proper job is leak detection, repair, then regas, which costs several times a plain top-up but stops the problem recurring. Be wary of any technician who suggests routine annual top-ups.

Check the simple things first: thermostat mode and setpoint, dirty filters, and blocked outdoor unit airflow. If those are fine, the usual culprits are low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor or fan motor, or a dirty coil. Low refrigerant always means a leak — a technician should find and fix the leak, not just top up the gas.

Most charge a call-out or diagnostic fee that covers travel and the first inspection; many waive or credit it against the repair if you go ahead. Confirm the fee, whether it is credited, and any surcharge for evenings, weekends, or urgent same-day visits before the technician is dispatched.

A musty smell means mould or bacteria on the evaporator coil or in the drain pan — fixed with a chemical wash. A burning smell can be dust on a heater element or a failing motor and is worth an inspection. A vinegar-like or chemical smell can indicate a refrigerant leak; turn the unit off and call a technician.

A standard service covers cleaning or replacing filters, cleaning the evaporator coil and blower, flushing the drainage tray and pipe, checking refrigerant pressure, testing thermostat and controls, and inspecting electrical connections. It does not include repairs, parts, or refrigerant top-ups — those are quoted separately.

Dirty coils and filters make the compressor work harder for the same cooling — energy use can rise 15-30% before you notice weaker airflow. A failing capacitor or low refrigerant has the same effect. A service that restores the unit to spec usually pays for itself in a hot season.

A standard service on a midwall split runs R550-R950 per unit, and a regas (only after leak repair) R900-R1,800 depending on gas type. Metro rates (Joburg, Cape Town, Durban) are at the upper end; add a call-out fee of R300-R500 outside central areas.

Repeated hard power cuts and surges are a leading cause of failed compressors and PCBs. A surge protector or delay-start relay (R500-R1,500 installed) is cheap insurance; many technicians fit one during a routine service.
