No country in our coverage requires it — tutoring is unregulated almost everywhere. That cuts both ways: excellent tutors exist without teaching credentials, but the burden of vetting subject knowledge, safeguarding checks and references sits entirely on you.

No references, refusal of a trial lesson, guaranteed grade promises, demanding a full term's payment up front, doing the student's homework for them, and vagueness about their own results or qualifications. Any two of these together — keep looking.

Three to six months before the exam for consolidation, or a full year for a student targeting a big grade jump. Starting six weeks out limits the tutor to triage — past-paper drilling on the highest-weight topics.

Set a baseline in week one (a recent test or past paper score), ask the tutor for a short written note after each month, and re-test with a comparable paper every 6-8 weeks. Judge on evidence, not on whether your child says the sessions are fine.

Commonly 5-15% for prepaid blocks of 10+ hours. Only prepay once you've done two or three sessions and seen the tutor work — a discount is worthless if you're locked into the wrong tutor.

Agencies vet tutors, handle replacements and mediate disputes, but add commission — often built into a higher hourly rate. Independents are cheaper and more flexible; you do the vetting. Many families start via an agency, then stay long-term with a tutor they trust.

Roughly: primary SGD 25-50/hr, secondary SGD 30-70/hr, JC/A-Level SGD 60-120/hr — within each level undergrads sit at the bottom and ex-MOE teachers at the top. IB and IP students pay JC-level rates.

Agencies are free for parents — they take commission from the tutor, typically 50% of the first two to four weeks of fees. That means tutors may push to go direct after matching; there's no rule against it, but you lose the agency's replacement guarantee.
