Once a year is the minimum for a system used seasonally; every 3-4 months if you run it daily in a hot climate. Regular servicing keeps coils and filters clean, which protects the compressor — the most expensive part to replace — and keeps energy use down.

Dirty coils and filters make the compressor work harder for the same cooling — energy use can rise 15-30% before you notice weaker airflow. A failing capacitor or low refrigerant has the same effect. A service that restores the unit to spec usually pays for itself in a hot season.

A common rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of a new unit, or the system is over 10-12 years old and needs a compressor or coil replacement, replace it. Newer inverter units are typically 30-50% more efficient, so heavy users recoup part of the cost through lower bills.

A standard service covers cleaning or replacing filters, cleaning the evaporator coil and blower, flushing the drainage tray and pipe, checking refrigerant pressure, testing thermostat and controls, and inspecting electrical connections. It does not include repairs, parts, or refrigerant top-ups — those are quoted separately.

A chemical wash cleans the coil, blower, and drain pan in place. A chemical overhaul dismantles the indoor unit completely, soaks the parts, checks bearings and seals, and reassembles it. Choose an overhaul when a wash has not fixed persistent leaks, noise, or weak cooling, or for units neglected for years.

With year-round daily use, every 3 months for general servicing is the common recommendation; quarterly contracts (4 visits) for a 3-unit system typically cost $180-$280 per year. A chemical wash every 12-18 months keeps coils clear in Singapore's humidity.
