Burning smells, tripping breakers, sparking sockets, a gas smell from a cooker, and a dryer that gets very hot or has a blocked vent. Unplug the appliance (or shut the gas valve) and stop using it until it's inspected. Water leaks near electrics also warrant switching off the circuit.

Plain appliance repair needs no HDB permit. But anything touching fixed electrical wiring must use an EMA-licensed electrical worker, and installation works involving drilling or piping must follow HDB renovation guidelines, including permitted hours for noisy work (weekdays and Saturday mornings).
