Mini sessions are 15-30 minutes at a location the photographer chose, often back-to-back with other clients, delivering 5-15 images at roughly half the price or less. Full sessions are 60-120 minutes, at your choice of location, with more posing variety and 20-50+ images. Minis suit updated family photos; milestones deserve a full session.

For portraits and family sessions, 20-50 edited images per hour of shooting is the common range. Events yield more (50-100/hour) with lighter editing. If a package promises hundreds of fully retouched images from a short session, the 'retouching' is probably just batch color correction.

Most include a base radius (often 20-50 km) and then charge per kilometre/mile or a flat travel fee beyond it. Destination work adds transport, accommodation, and sometimes a day rate for travel days. Always ask where the included radius ends — it's a common surprise line item.

Date, duration, locations, deliverables (number of edited images, resolution, delivery format and deadline), price and payment schedule, cancellation and reschedule terms, usage rights for both sides, and a backup plan if the photographer is ill. No contract, no booking — this protects both parties.

20-50% to hold the date, with the balance due on or before the shoot day. A retainer is usually non-refundable if you cancel late, because the date can't be resold. Check the reschedule policy — good photographers allow one free weather or illness reschedule for outdoor shoots.

Rates run NZD $150-$400 per hour, Auckland and Queenstown at the top. One-hour portrait or family sessions typically total $300-$650; minis run $150-$280. Full-day wedding coverage clusters at $2,500-$5,000.

Commercial photography on public conservation land generally requires a DOC concession, though simple portrait shoots may qualify for a low-cost permit depending on location and impact. Queenstown and other scenic hotspots enforce this. Ask the photographer to confirm permission is sorted before the day.
