How to hire a drywall installation & repair pro in New Zealand

  1. For structural or bracing walls, check whether the work is restricted building work needing a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP)
  2. Confirm the quote includes stopping (jointing compound coats) and sanding, not just fixing board
  3. Ask for public liability insurance
  4. In pre-1990s homes, ask about asbestos checks on textured ceilings before sanding
  5. Get a written quote with GST and disposal included
  6. Check reviews on Builderscrack or NoCowboys with photos of finished work

Like-for-like plasterboard repair is exempt building work, but replacing bracing elements (GIB bracing walls are common in NZ construction) can be restricted building work requiring an LBP. Textured ceilings applied before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos.

Frequently asked questions

Should water-damaged drywall be repaired or replaced?

If board has swollen, sagged, or grown mould it must be cut out and replaced — drying alone is not enough. Fix the leak first, cut back at least 30 cm beyond visible damage, and let the cavity dry before new board goes in. Persistent damp needs a moisture-meter check.

What is the difference between drywall repair and plastering?

Drywall (plasterboard) repair replaces or patches board sheets and finishes the joints with tape and compound. Traditional plastering applies wet plaster coats over masonry or lath. Older homes often have solid plaster walls that need a plasterer, not a drywall contractor.

What causes drywall cracks and should I worry?

Hairline cracks at joints and above door frames are usually seasonal movement and are cosmetic. Wide (over 3 mm), diagonal, or recurring cracks, or cracks paired with sticking doors, can indicate settlement — get a builder or structural engineer to look before patching.

Does drywall repair include painting?

Usually not. Most drywall contractors leave the wall sanded and primed (or just sanded), ready for your painter. Ask explicitly — some will prime and paint the patch for an extra fee, but colour-matching an aged painted wall often means repainting the whole wall.

How long does a drywall repair take?

Even a small patch takes 2-3 visits or one long day, because joint compound needs drying time between coats. A typical patch is fill day one, sand and second coat day two, final sand and ready for paint day three. Quick-set compounds can compress this to one day for small jobs.

Can I patch drywall myself?

Holes smaller than a fist are a reasonable DIY job with a patch kit. Anything larger than about 30 cm, ceiling repairs, or water damage is worth hiring out — matching the surrounding texture and getting invisible joints takes practice and proper tools.

What is GIB stopping?

GIB is NZ's dominant plasterboard brand, and 'stopping' is the Kiwi term for taping and finishing joints with compound. A 'GIB stopper' is the finishing trade you want for invisible repairs.
