Small like-for-like fixes — replacing a tap washer, a toilet flush mechanism, a light fitting on an existing point — are commonly done by handymen where local law allows. New circuits, consumer-unit work, gas appliances, and anything behind walls generally require a licensed electrician or plumber, and in several countries even socket replacement is restricted. All three models exist. Hourly suits a list of small tasks; most handymen have a 1-2 hour minimum. Half-day and day rates are cheaper per hour and suit longer lists. Fixed per-job quotes are common for standard tasks like TV mounting or door adjustment. For anything over 2 hours, ask for a fixed quote so scope creep is the handyman's risk, not yours.

For small jobs, 3-7 days is typical in most cities; same-week slots are common outside peak periods. Demand spikes around end-of-month moving dates, holidays, and (in seasonal climates) spring. For rental move-out repairs, book at least two weeks before your inspection date.

Batch your tasks. The call-out and setup time is fixed, so one visit with 5 small jobs costs far less than 5 separate visits. Write a task list in priority order, photograph each item, and send it before the visit so the handyman brings the right materials and gives a realistic estimate.

Typical rates: RM60-RM100 per hour or fixed per-task prices — e.g. drilling and mounting RM80-RM150 per item, door lock replacement RM100-RM200, tap replacement RM80-RM180. Klang Valley sits at the top of the range; Penang and JB slightly lower.

For repairs and mounting, usually just a contractor pass at the guardhouse. Anything involving hacking, plumbing alterations, or works affecting common property needs written management approval under strata rules — check with your JMB/MC before booking.
