Most handymen charge either a call-out fee that covers travel plus the first 30-60 minutes, or a minimum of 1-2 hours' labor. That is legitimate — travel and setup are real costs. What is not standard: a call-out fee plus full-price first hour plus a materials 'handling' surcharge stacked together. Ask for the all-in price for your task list before booking.

Either works, but agree upfront. Handymen typically add 10-20% to materials they buy — fair payment for their time sourcing them. For anything specific (a particular light fitting, tap, or shelf bracket), buy it yourself first and let the visit be pure labor. Always ask for receipts if they buy on your behalf.

Only if they carry public liability insurance — ask for proof before work that could cause damage (drilling near pipes, working at height, plumbing fixes). A burst pipe behind a wall or a TV that falls off its mount can cost far more than the job itself. Reputable handymen expect the question.
