Tree Removal & Trimming in Galway

In most common-law countries you may trim overhanging branches back to the boundary at your own cost (offering the cuttings back), but you can't compel removal unless the tree is dangerous. Rules differ by country and state — document concerns in writing and check local dispute processes before escalating.

In Galway, look for certified arborists (ISA certification or the local equivalent) with dedicated tree-work insurance — general handyman liability doesn't cover felling. Ask how they'll dismantle the tree, whether they're climbing or using an elevated platform, and get proof of insurance before anyone starts a saw.

Dormant-season (late winter) pruning suits most deciduous species, and arborists' schedules are quieter then. Legal timing matters too: many countries restrict work during bird-nesting season, and some species (oaks, elms) have disease-driven no-prune windows. Emergency safety work happens whenever needed.

Price scales with height, trunk diameter, condition and — above all — access and what the tree can fall on. A small open-lawn tree is a morning's work; a large tree over a house, pool or power lines needs rigging or a crane and costs many times more. Stump grinding is almost always quoted separately.

Stump grinding is priced per stump by diameter, with minimum call-out fees making single small stumps relatively expensive and multi-stump jobs cheaper per unit. Grinding goes 15-30 cm below grade — enough to replant grass, but not always enough for building over; full root removal costs much more.

Hedgerow cutting is banned 1 March – 31 August to protect nesting birds, with exemptions for road safety and certain works. Garden tree pruning isn't strictly caught, but reputable contractors avoid disturbing active nests — plan major works for autumn-winter.
