Fixed-price quotes for defined jobs have some room, especially if you are flexible on timing or bundle several jobs into one visit. Hourly rates rarely move. What works better than haggling: asking for the quote to be itemised, supplying your own fixtures (if the plumber agrees), and scheduling non-urgent work in the plumber's quiet periods.

Reputable plumbers warrant their labour — commonly 3-12 months on repairs, longer on installations — separate from the manufacturer's warranty on parts. Get the warranty stated on the invoice. A plumber who won't put any guarantee in writing is telling you something.

Shut off the water at the main stop valve first — that turns most 'emergencies' into next-day jobs and saves the after-hours premium. Call an emergency plumber immediately only if you cannot stop the flow, water is reaching electrical fittings, sewage is backing up, or a ceiling is bulging with trapped water.

Machine-snaking a stubborn blockage costs more, and a camera inspection plus jetting for recurring blockages is a separate, larger job. If the same drain blocks repeatedly, pay for the camera inspection: repeat call-outs cost more than diagnosing the root cause once.

Plumbers handle supply pipes, fixtures, and internal waste pipes. Drainage specialists handle underground drains, sewers, jetting, and camera surveys. For a recurring underground blockage or collapsed drain, a drainage firm with a jetting rig and CCTV camera is usually cheaper and faster than a general plumber.

Plumbers charge either an hourly rate plus a call-out fee, or a fixed price per job. Small repairs (dripping tap, running toilet) usually cost one to two hours of labour plus parts; bigger jobs like replacing a toilet or water heater are quoted fixed. Always ask whether the call-out fee is waived if you go ahead with the work.

Per-job pricing is standard: unclogging (通渠) runs HK$300-HK$1,200 depending on severity, tap or valve replacement HK$300-HK$800, and toilet replacement HK$800-HK$3,000 including a standard unit. Emergency night calls carry a 50-100% premium.

The owner of the source of the leak is responsible, but proving the source is the hard part. Start with your management office, which can arrange inspection; unresolved cases go to the Buildings Department/FEHD Joint Office for inter-floor water seepage. Keep photos and correspondence — these disputes are slow.
