For a single fix, use a handyman. For a rental portfolio or recurring building maintenance, a company usually wins.

For small jobs, 3-7 days is typical in most cities; same-week slots are common outside peak periods. Demand spikes around end-of-month moving dates, holidays, and (in seasonal climates) spring. For rental move-out repairs, book at least two weeks before your inspection date.

Either works, but agree upfront. Handymen typically add 10-20% to materials they buy — fair payment for their time sourcing them. For anything specific (a particular light fitting, tap, or shelf bracket), buy it yourself first and let the visit be pure labor. Always ask for receipts if they buy on your behalf.

Batch your tasks. The call-out and setup time is fixed, so one visit with 5 small jobs costs far less than 5 separate visits. Write a task list in priority order, photograph each item, and send it before the visit so the handyman brings the right materials and gives a realistic estimate.

Per-task pricing is standard: drilling and mounting HK$200-$500 per item, door lock replacement HK$400-$800, tap or flush repairs HK$300-$700. A half-day of batched work runs HK$800-$1,500. Call-out minimums of HK$300-$500 are common on Hong Kong Island.

Management offices can enforce deed-of-mutual-covenant rules: contractor registration at the front desk, work restricted to weekday hours, and protective coverings in common areas. Book the registration a day ahead and tell your handyman the building's rules to avoid a wasted trip.
