Use the 50% rule: if the repair quote exceeds 50% of the price of a comparable new appliance, and the machine is past half its expected lifespan (about 10 years for washers, 12-15 for fridges), replacement usually wins. Under warranty or for premium brands, repair almost always wins.

It covers the technician's travel and the time to diagnose the fault. Most firms charge it even if you decline the repair, but many waive or credit it against the repair if you go ahead. Confirm this before booking — it is the single most disputed line item.

Diagnosis takes 20-45 minutes. If the part is on the van, most repairs finish in under 90 minutes. If a part must be ordered, expect a second visit 2-10 days later; ask whether the second visit incurs another call-out fee (it usually shouldn't).

Check the pump filter first — it is behind a small hatch at the bottom front on most machines, and a coin or sock in the filter is the most common cause. Clearing it is safe and free. If the filter is clear and it still won't drain, the drain pump has likely failed, which is a technician job.

Cheap causes: blocked vents, failed door seal, dusty condenser coils, or a faulty thermostat. Expensive causes: compressor or refrigerant leak — sealed-system repairs need a certified refrigeration technician and often cost more than a mid-range replacement fridge. Get a diagnosis before assuming the worst.

Door-to-door inspection fees run HK$200-HK$500, usually offset against the repair. Common washing machine or fridge repairs total HK$400-HK$1,200 including parts; compressor or PCB jobs can reach HK$2,000+, where replacement is often more economical.

Only registered gas installers working for registered gas contractors under the Gas Safety Ordinance. Towngas and licensed contractors publish their registration; ask for it. Unregistered gas work is a criminal offence and genuinely dangerous in HK's high-rise flats.
