Book 2-4 weeks ahead for a standard local move, and 6-8 weeks for peak periods — summer, the start and end of each month, and weekends, which sell out first. Last-minute slots exist midweek and mid-month, and some companies discount them.

Basic coverage included in most quotes is minimal (often a small amount per item or per kilo/pound). Ask about full-value protection or goods-in-transit insurance, what it costs, and what's excluded — owner-packed boxes are usually not covered for breakage. Photograph valuable items before the move and note any damage on the delivery sheet before the crew leaves.

Declutter first — volume drives price, and a skip-load of junk can be cheaper than moving it. Pack yourself, dismantle furniture in advance, book midweek and mid-month, and be fully ready when the crew arrives (hourly clocks run while you tape boxes). Moving the small stuff yourself by car and leaving only furniture to the pros also shrinks the crew hours.

A man-with-a-van outfit is 1-2 people and a mid-size van — ideal for studio/1-bed moves, single items, and short hops, at roughly half the hourly cost of a full crew. Full moving companies bring bigger trucks, more crew, packing services and proper transit insurance — worth it from a 2-bedroom home upward or when access is difficult.

Many moving companies offer short-term storage (their own warehouse or partnered self-storage), useful when completion dates don't line up. Expect a re-delivery fee plus weekly or monthly storage charges, and check whether insurance covers goods while in storage — it's often a separate policy from transit cover.
