Not always. Mulch-mowing (leaving fine clippings on the lawn) is the default for many providers and is actually good for the lawn. Bagging and hauling clippings off-site costs extra because green waste disposal is charged by volume. If you want clippings removed, say so at quote time — it can add 10-25% to the visit price.

Lawn treatment programs are usually sold as 4-6 applications per year covering fertiliser, broadleaf weed control, and sometimes moss or grub treatment. Each application is priced by lawn area. Annual programs cost roughly the same as 6-10 standard mows. In many countries the person applying herbicides commercially must hold a pesticide applicator certification — ask to see it.

Long grass has to be cut in stages, clogs mowers, and generates volumes of clippings that must be raked and hauled away. Most providers charge 1.5-2x the standard rate for a first cut on an overgrown lawn, then drop to the normal rate once it's on a schedule. Some charge an hourly rate for the first visit only.

Give the provider your approximate lawn area (front and back separately), whether there are slopes, obstacles like trampolines or beds, gate width (ride-on mowers need wide access), and when it was last cut. Photos or a pin on a map are usually enough — most providers in Richmond will quote from aerial imagery without a site visit.

Ontario's cosmetic pesticides ban (since 2009) prohibits most synthetic herbicides for lawn aesthetics, and Quebec and several other provinces have similar restrictions. Companies use alternatives like iron chelate (Fiesta) for broadleaf weeds, which needs more repeat applications — that's why treatment programs cost more per result than in the US.

Roughly May through October in most provinces, shorter on the Prairies, longer on the BC coast. Contracts price 22-26 visits per season. Many companies bundle summer mowing with winter snow clearing into a single year-round property maintenance contract — often the best per-visit value if you need both.
