Rule of thumb: if the boiler is over 10-12 years old, out of warranty, and the repair costs more than a third of a new unit, replace it. Newer boilers are far more efficient, so a replacement often pays back through lower running costs on top of ending the breakdowns.

A simple service or minor part is inexpensive; replacing a failed component like a circuit board, pump or diverter valve is a mid-range repair; a full boiler replacement is the big-ticket job. Age is the deciding factor — past 10-12 years, repeated repairs usually mean it's time to replace.

A like-for-like combi swap is usually a one-day job; changing boiler type (e.g. conventional to combi) or relocating it takes two to three days with extra pipework. Have the engineer confirm the flue, gas supply and pipework are adequate before quoting.

A service plan spreads the annual check and often includes breakdown cover for parts and labour. It's worth it for older boilers or if a breakdown would be a crisis; for a newer boiler under warranty, a standalone annual service may be cheaper.

Frequent culprits: no hot water or heating (diverter valve, thermostat), low pressure (leak or expansion vessel), pilot/ignition failure, strange banging (kettling from limescale), and leaks. Many are affordable fixes; a cracked heat exchanger is the one that usually condemns a boiler.

Annually. A yearly service keeps the manufacturer's warranty valid, catches wear before it becomes a breakdown, and confirms safe combustion. Landlords are legally required to have an annual gas safety check in many countries; owner-occupiers should treat it as maintenance, not optional.

Gas and oil boiler work is safety-critical and legally restricted to registered engineers almost everywhere (see country notes). Never let an unregistered person touch a gas appliance — carbon monoxide and explosion risks are real, and it voids insurance and warranties.

Generally yes — boiler/gas-appliance replacement requires a permit and a licensed gas fitter, with an inspection in most provinces. Ask the contractor to pull the permit; skipping it can void insurance and complicate a home sale.
