Use the 50% rule: if the repair quote exceeds 50% of the price of a comparable new appliance, and the machine is past half its expected lifespan (about 10 years for washers, 12-15 for fridges), replacement usually wins. Under warranty or for premium brands, repair almost always wins.

It covers the technician's travel and the time to diagnose the fault. Most firms charge it even if you decline the repair, but many waive or credit it against the repair if you go ahead. Confirm this before booking — it is the single most disputed line item.

Diagnosis takes 20-45 minutes. If the part is on the van, most repairs finish in under 90 minutes. If a part must be ordered, expect a second visit 2-10 days later; ask whether the second visit incurs another call-out fee (it usually shouldn't).

Check the pump filter first — it is behind a small hatch at the bottom front on most machines, and a coin or sock in the filter is the most common cause. Clearing it is safe and free. If the filter is clear and it still won't drain, the drain pump has likely failed, which is a technician job.

Cheap causes: blocked vents, failed door seal, dusty condenser coils, or a faulty thermostat. Expensive causes: compressor or refrigerant leak — sealed-system repairs need a certified refrigeration technician and often cost more than a mid-range replacement fridge. Get a diagnosis before assuming the worst.

It depends on the appliance and country. Work on gas appliances (cookers, gas dryers) and refrigerant circuits is legally restricted to certified technicians in most countries. General electrical appliance repair is usually unlicensed, so vet insurance, brand training, and reviews instead.

Typically $80-$150 for travel plus diagnosis, often credited to the repair. Full repairs commonly land between $150 and $450; sealed-system fridge repairs can exceed $800, where replacement usually makes more sense.

Only a licensed gas technician — certification is provincial (TSSA gas technician licence in Ontario, Technical Safety BC gas fitter in BC, etc.). General appliance techs without a gas ticket cannot legally disconnect or work on the gas side of the appliance.
